Abstract : A compound distributions is a probability distribution that results from assuming that certain parameters in a random variable are random variables themselves. Such distributions are well known to statisticians and actuaries, but less famous in the community of dynamical systems and geometry. In this talk, we will focus on the compound Poisson distribution, and how it arises naturally from smooth dynamical systems. We will also discuss the rare event dichotomy for periodic and non-periodic orbits, and (if time permits) how to generalize it to other measure zero sets.
