Abstract: We connect CR and Finlser geometry with the help of an observation from mathematical theory of relativity: with the help of a generalization of the Fermat principle in general relativity, we show that chains in CR geometry are geodesics of a certain Kropina metric constructed from the CR structure. This observation allows us to combine the results and methods from both theories, and to reprove and generalize the classical results of [J.-H. Cheng, 1988] stating that chains determine the CR structure, and of [H. Jacobowitz 1985] stating that two points can be connected by a chain. The talk is based on the joint work [arXiv:1806.01877] with J.H. Cheng, T. Marugame and R. Montgomery.
