Abstract: Let A be a compact complex analytic space embedded into a complex analytic space X. It is said that the formal principle holds for (A,X) if, for any another such pair (A',X') such that the "formal completion" of X along A is equivalent to that of X' along A', one can find neighborhoods of A and A' which are actually equivalent. There remain interesting open questions on the formal principle. Positive

results and counterexamples will be reviewed.
