Abstract : In 1988, Macdonald introduced a family of symmetric functions, now called Macdonald polynomials. In the theory of Macdonald polynomials, the equal parameter case of the q-Dyson constant term identity can be explained as a scalar product of two 1’s. This provides a satisfactory explanation for the equal parameter case of the q-Dyson identity in terms of orthogonal polynomials. Finding a similar such explanation for the full q-Dyson identity is an important open problem. Towards this end, we are concerned about the q-Dyson orthogonality problem.  We find a recursion for a symmetric function generalization of the q-Dyson identity by combining the Gessel—Xin method with plethystic substitutions.
