Abstract : I will talk about the notion of property (T) (a la Kazhdan) of groups and explain how they become a coveted property for mathematicians through applications in several branches of mathematics (such as the explicit construction of families of expander graphs, or the classification of Von Neumann algebras). Originally forged for applications on lattices of Lie groups, in the past years relevant results have been extended quite generally to other (discrete) groups. Thus we will focus in the latter part of the talk on the newer strategies in establishing property (T) for discrete groups, with some new examples and results.
