摘要：

Free probability is a flourishing branch of non-commutative probability that emerged about thirty years ago and has deep connections with combinatorics, operator algebras, and random matrices. In this talk, I will try to situate free probability within the mathematical landscape, explain what it is, and give an idea of the kind of things that one does with it. The talk is intended for a general mathematical audience. In particular, I will assume no prior knowledge of any kind of probability, commutative or not.
